The idea for Curriculum-in-the-Making comes out of an appreciation of the complexities associated with teaching in the area of HIV/AIDS, the fact that one set of learning materials cannot fully address these complexities, and the fact that it is neither desirable nor possible to envision a set of ‘teacher proof’ materials. At the centre of much of the work in combating HIV and AIDS must surely be the recognition that universities themselves, have a key role to play. Such leadership might include research itself along with community outreach, it can include attention to what might be described as ‘student life’ in the university context (particularly in relation to the extra-curricular lives of students), and it can pertain to teaching. South African Higher Education’s response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic will be discussed at a symposium on 1 April during the 4th SA AIDS Conference in Durban from 31 March to 3 April 2009.

A Policy Framework on HIV and AIDS for Higher Education Institutions in South Africa was adopted by the Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, and the 23 public sector higher education institutions in South Africa in October 2008.
