The HIV and Teacher Education Pilot Project was initiated under HEAIDS Phase 2 and was premised on the critical importance of the capacity of the education and training system to deal with the challenges posed by teaching and learning in an HIV/AIDS affected and infected society. At the centre of much of the work in combating HIV and AIDS must surely be the recognition that universities themselves, have a key role to play. Such leadership might include research itself along with community outreach, it can include attention to what might be described as ‘student life’ in the university context (particularly in relation to the extra-curricular lives of students), and it can pertain to teaching. The idea for Curriculum-in-the-Making comes out of an appreciation of the complexities associated with teaching in the area of HIV/AIDS, the fact that one set of learning materials cannot fully address these complexities, and the fact that it is neither desirable nor possible to envision a set of ‘teacher proof’ materials.
